Learning Outcomes and Application This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to assess and apply gilding requirements to new picture frames and those requiring repair or restoration.This unit applies to picture framers offering specialised gilding services. They use discretion, judgement and specialised knowledge to select, use and adapt different materials and techniquesNo licensing or certification requirements exist at the time of publication. Relevant legislation, industry standards and codes of practice within Australia must be applied.
Duration and Setting X weeks, nominally xx hours, delivered in a classroom/online/blended learning setting.

  • Identify gilding requirements from work order and examination of frame
  • Examine frame and identify whether new gilding, preservation or restoration techniques are required
  • Identify and follow work health and safety requirements throughout the work
  • Select and check tools and equipment for quality, serviceability and safety prior to use
  • Identify and assemble gilding materials and any associated finishes
  • Plan work sequence based on application techniques required

  • Check frames for correct preparation and required maintenance of original finishes that require the removal of over painting
  • Repair or report surface faults in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Complete required composition work in accordance with workplace procedures
  • Apply gilding using established techniques in accordance with job requirements and workplace procedures
  • Apply required ornamentation in accordance with job requirements and workplace procedures
  • Check surface finish against job requirements and rectify any faults to achieve required result
